Garment Care

Caring for Il Lanificio garments is a thoughtful gesture that preserves their beauty, quality, and longevity. Whether it’s a linen shirt, a wool blazer or a cashmere turtleneck, each natural fibre requires its own care routine. In this guide, you’ll find practical tips on how to wash, dry, and store your garments, based on their fabric and tailored construction.

How to read the Label

Every Il Lanificio piece includes a care label with detailed washing instructions. This should always be your first point of reference. However, with natural fibres, it’s helpful to also know general best practices — these will extend the garment’s life and reduce the risk of accidental damage.

Care instructions by material

Wool Garments – How to wash them

Wool is one of the most appreciated natural fibres for its ability to regulate body temperature. It provides warmth without overheating and offers unparalleled comfort. Soft, elastic and breathable, it’s ideal for cold seasons and transitional weather thanks to its ability to absorb moisture while remaining dry to the touch. However, washing wool garments requires care: this is a living fibre that can shrink, felt or lose its shape if treated incorrectly.

How to wash:

  • Prefer hand washing in cold water, using wool-specific detergents free of harsh enzymes.
  • Alternatively, use the wool setting on your washing machine, at a maximum temperature of 30°C and a gentle spin (no more than 400–600 rpm).
  • Avoid prolonged soaking: a few minutes is enough. Do not scrub or wring the garment to avoid damaging the fibres.
  • After washing, gently press out excess water with a towel, and dry flat on a clean surface away from direct heat (radiators, sunlight).
  • Never use a tumble dryer: heat and agitation can cause wool to felt, harden and lose shape irreversibly.

Taking proper care of wool garments helps maintain their softness, original shape, and quality over time. Even a simple jumper or a coat, when treated gently, can stay elegant for years.

Silk Garments – How to wash them

Silk is a precious, lightweight fibre known for its natural lustre and soft touch. Chosen for its elegance, it's ideal for occasionwear, refined shirts, and fluid blouses. However, washing silk garments requires great delicacy, as this material is sensitive to strong detergents and sudden temperature changes.

How to wash:

  • Always prefer hand washing in cold or lukewarm water (max 30°C), using silk-specific or pH-neutral detergent.

  • Soak briefly and move gently in the water – do not scrub or wring.

  • Rinse thoroughly and add a teaspoon of white vinegar to the final rinse to revive the silk’s sheen.

  • Dry flat or hanging, in the shade, avoiding direct sunlight which can fade colours.

  • Do not tumble dry or place near direct heat.

  • If needed, iron inside out at low temperature, or with a cloth between iron and fabric, while slightly damp.

With proper care, silk garments retain their colour, texture and fit, keeping the sophisticated allure that makes this fibre truly unique.

Cashmere Garments – How to wash them

Cashmere is a luxurious natural fibre, beloved for its lightweight warmth and extraordinary softness. Derived from Hircus goats, it’s one of the most precious materials in the world. Washing cashmere properly is essential to preserve its quality and longevity.

How to wash:

  • Hand wash in cold water, using detergents specifically made for wool or cashmere. Avoid soaking the garment for too long.
  • Do not scrub: immerse and move gently for just a few minutes.
  • Rinse with water at the same temperature to avoid thermal shock.
  • Never wring: press out excess water by rolling the item in a towel.
  • Dry flat, in the shade, and reshape the garment as it dries.
  • Avoid hanging, which can deform the structure. Never use a tumble dryer.

A well-cared-for cashmere jumper will stay soft, plush, and bright even after many wears. With just a few precise and regular steps, your piece can last for years.

Cotton Garments – How to wash them

Cotton is a strong and versatile natural fibre, loved for its breathability and comfort across all seasons. Shirts, t-shirts, trousers, and dresses in cotton are ideal for daily wear – but they also deserve proper care to stay fresh and in shape.

How to wash:

  • Machine washable, but always check the label. Prefer temperatures between 30°C and 40°C to preserve colour and fabric structure.
  • For dark or coloured items, use a delicate or colour-safe detergent.
  • Avoid overloading the drum and select a medium spin to prevent fibre stress.
  • If the cotton is organic or untreated, opt for a delicate cycle or hand wash.
  • Air dry, preferably on a hanger but out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.
  • Iron at medium-high heat with steam if needed.

Washing cotton correctly helps maintain colour brilliance, durability, and the soft feel that makes it so popular.

Linen Garments – How to wash them

Linen is one of the oldest and most loved natural fibres, known for its freshness, lightness, and aesthetic appeal. Perfect for summer shirts, trousers and dresses, linen offers a laid-back yet refined charm—but it can wrinkle or stiffen if not washed properly.

How to wash:

  • Hand wash or use a delicate machine cycle at a maximum of 30°C, with mild detergent.
  • Avoid bleach or aggressive softeners.
  • Turn garments inside out before washing to protect the weave.
  • Use a short and gentle spin to reduce wrinkling.
  • Air dry, ideally on a hanger, to naturally smooth out creases.
  • Iron at high temperature, preferably while still damp, for the smoothest result.

Caring for linen garments properly enhances the natural texture and longevity of the fabric, preserving its casual elegance even after many washes. It’s the ideal fabric for effortless yet elevated summer style—but it does deserve a little extra attention.
